Please help.

A controversial figure throughout most of his public life, the Black leader Marcus Garvey advocated that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom.

that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom
that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him
that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him
some Black's returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom
some Black's return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa

Thanks.

that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom
that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him - here meaning changes and the option means that the blacks return to African land is the symbol of freedom.
that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him - here the sentence means that Africa was sometimes a land and now it isn't.
some Black's returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom - same as C
some Black's return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa - same as B

the answer should be A

hii Mankey,

As far as I can recall, I got this one in Kaplan CAT. I couldn't remember the OA, but it should be A.

"Advocated" require subjunctive : so we are left with A, B and C.

C is clearly wrong : which....which...Moreover in GMAT when "which" is used as a modifier is always preceded by a "comma" - non essential modifier. Here we cannot afford to make it a non essential one or else the whole essence of the sentence will not stand.

B - here "symbolizing................" modifies the "african land". This means that they should move to only those African land that symbolizes the possibility of freedom not other parts of Africa.

But the original meaning talks about whole of Africa --- any parts of africa as africa is a land that symbolizes the possibility of freedom according to him.

Moreover there is a difference between "Africa" and "African land", they are not synonyms

Just take for example :

India Guide on Land of India offers detailed information about physical features of Indian Land, Indian Mountains, Valleys in India, Indian Rivers - indian land is specific,

I hope you understood the difference between Africa and African land.

Hope this helps
