At the completion of World War II, Japan agreed to abandon its position as an imperial power, allocated funds for victims in war crimes, and the Treaty of San Francisco was signed.

(A) allocated funds for victims in war crimes, and the Treaty of San Francisco was signed
(B) to allocate funds for victims in war crimes, and to sign the Treaty of San Francisco
(C) allocated funds for victims of war crimes, and signed the Treaty of San Francisco
(D) allocating funds for victims of war crimes, and signing the Treaty of San Francisco
(E) to allocate funds for victims of war crimes, and the Treaty of San Francisco was signed

Answer please .

I am stuck between B and D options . Please help.

Pick B.

Observer the parallelism.

At the completion of World War II, Japan agreed to abandon its position as an imperial power, to allocate funds for victims in war crimes, and to sign the Treaty of San Francisco.

Hope that helps..

I initially picked B for the answer as well. However, I'm still dubious as to why D can't be a correct answer... why can't we treat "allocating funds for victims of war crimes, and signing the Treaty of San Francisco" as a clause modifying "imperial power?"

Dear Domnu,

Imperial power is not allocating funds, and signing the Treaty. It is Japan that is doing it.

Thanks,
Viju
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group

But Japan was the imperial power... that's what's confusing me. :(

Yes, that's right. But look at the subject here. Japan is the subject :) and not the imperial power.

Viju

I have a question here....what is the correct structure:
allocate funds for victims in war crimes or
allocate funds for victims of war crimes
Thanks and Regards,

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this statement?

agreed to abandon, allocated funds, signed the Treaty
Are these 3 not parallel?

I agree with kvcpk. I choose C as well due to ||ism as mentioned above.
Moreover, I feel usage of " victims in war crimes" in B is not correct. It should be "victims of war crimes" as in C.
I am on a break !!

Hi I think the correct answer is B due to parallelism.

Problem with Agreed to abondon, signed is that we should not focus on agreed, but after that, i.e. to abondon.... etc.
Hope this helps.

I agree C looks better than B. I think B has superficial parallelism and it also alters the meaning of the original sentence. The original sentence says that Japan signed Treaty of San Francisco at the completion of World War II, whereas Option B says that Japan only agreed to sign. I also agree that "victims of war crimes" is better than "victims in war crimes".

Nicely spotted Praveen.

a search in google for 'victims in war crimes' gives zero result.
i also feel C is the right choice.

Is the answer C then?
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group
