Being a proposition of set theory is Zorn's lemma that occurs in the proofs of several theorems of crucial importance, for instance, the Hahn-Banach theorem asserting that every vector space has a basis and Tychonoff's theorem stating that every product of compact spaces is compact.

OE is

Beginning the noun clause with being is extremely awkward and makes the meaning of the sentence unclear and difficult to read.

Choice D removes the awkward being and turns a proposition of set theory into a correctly placed modifier describing Zorn's lemma. Choice D is correct.

Choice B retains the awkward being and changes the verb occurs into the verbal occurring, which cannot act as the main verb of the adjective clause; the sentence thus becomes a fragment.

Choice C incorrectly uses an independent clause as an opening modifier and fails to provide a main verb to describe Zorn's lemma, making the sentence illogical.

Choice E contains a misplaced modifier, since the opening phrase is meant to describe Zorn's lemma and not just a general proposition of set theory. The sentence is also illogical because the examples introduced by for instance are meant to describe the theorems that Zorn's lemma occurs in, not the fact that a proposition of set theory is Zorn's lemma.
