quote {"RonPurewal"

this SC, Ron or other mentors
On Earth, among the surest indications of sunspot cycles are believed to be the rate that trees grow, as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks.

A. On Earth, among the surest indications of sunspot cycles are believed to be the rate that trees grow
B. On Earth, among the surest indications of sunspot cycles are, it is believed, the rate of tree growth
C. On Earth, the rate at which trees grow is believed to be among the surest indications of sunspot cycles
D. Among the surest indications on Earth of sunspot cycles, believed to be the tree growth rate
E. Among the surest indications on Earth of sunspot cycles is believed to be the rate at which trees grow

some things wrong with c:
* the placement of 'on earth' is just as problematic as in choice a (again, the sentence seems to be saying that residents of other planets disagree with us).
quote]

I agree, but I have other problem
hi , I have viewed many posts about--> comma+ as + verb ed/ ing+...--->modify a noun.
So I summarize that when I see comma +as +verbed/ ing, I should see whether it modify the noun before it, if it is not, it will be wrong.
right?
In fact, I am puzzled about the usage of "noun, comma+ as +verb ed/ ing" like in this SC. can you tell me, thanks

another question about as well as

I quote:

According to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, aspirin prevents blood clots just as well as a commonly used and more expensive blood-thinning drug does.

(A) prevents blood clots just as well as a commonly used and more expensive blood-thinning drug does
(B) prevents blood clots just as well as does a commonly used and a more expensive blood-thinning drug
(C) prevents blood clots just as well as will a commonly used and more expensive blood-thinning drug
(D) works just as well as a commonly used and more expensive blood-thinning drug at the prevention of blood clots
(E) works just as well as does a commonly used blood-thinning drug, which is also more expensive, at preventing blood clots

en, I am concerned on " the usage of as well as ". as well as is different from and.as well as can not link clause/ sentence
In a, as well as is adv or what?
thanks

ANSWER:
1E
2 A

from prep
thanks everyone

Lemme try to explain in simple way why C is wrong.

Option C Reads like this : --

On Earth, the rate at which trees grow is believed to be among the surest indications of sunspot cycles ,
as seen in the rings visible
in the cross sections of their trunks.

"as seen in the rings visible" Modifies sunspot cycles - WHich is WRONG

Not only any particular example you have cited. All modifiers normally modify the nearest Noun / pronoun/ etc..

Hope this helps

Is E the answer for the first SC ?

For the second SC it is A

Just as well as is used here to make a relative comparison between Aspirin's ability to suppress clots and the other drug's ability
