in 174 - doesn't 'that' in choice C modify 'forhead' instead of 'sound'?

In choice B 'this' is ambiguous. This could refer to either sounds, or forheads.

in Choice A - elephants did not originate from forheads

Choice D - I just can't seem to digest it

all that remains is E - which is what I will have to go with. I don't like this choice though

B
B

By installing special electric pumps,.... - ask yourself - who installed special electric pumps? farmer's houses or farmers?

imo D (for the last problem)

OA please...

1. E (used as or use as)
2. B (Govermentally is wrong(c), present perfect is wrong usage of tense here (D) )

3. B
4. C/E => C (IMO, its the agriculture engg. who installed the pumps)
C is active, E is passive

I have verified and corrected my answers so here goes my explanation.

Ans: C

174

A
is incorrect
because elephants are not believed to originate from small areas....

B
as already said this is ambiguious
also
they can refer to
"that are believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads" is not an essential modifier
it has to be between two commas as it is in C

DE
Originating, it is believed
is incorrect

also in D
part before ; is not a sentence

E says elephants may be used...Wrong

188

Ans: D

By installing special electric pumps
should modify farmers
so only D is correct

There may be some confusion wrt C and E
but agricultural engineer here is incorrect

had this been
while installing agricultural engineer then agricultural engineer would have been correct.

Hope this helps

stop - can you give me an example where 'that' is an essential modifier? I am a bit lost with
''it has to be between two commas as it is in C ''
