The ancient Romans piped hot water through the walls and under the floors so as to warm up the rooms.

A. so as to warm up the rooms
B. and so would be able to warm up the rooms
C. to warm the rooms up
D. so that they could warm up the rooms
E. in order that they would warm up the rooms
"they" refers to "the ancient Romans"

In choice A, "so as to" means something is get to the enough degree to do something. So, this is not the intended meaning of the author.

In choice B, "and so" is wrong usage.

In choice C, "to warm up the room" expresses the intention. However, this is not the intended meaning of author.

In choice E, "in order that" is always wrong

The correct answer choice is D. "so that" expresses the consequences of action. "they" refers to right antecedent.

in the proper answer, does the word "they" refer to walls & floors or the ancient romans?
IMO walls & floors should warm up the rooms.

And the option A should be wrong because we dont know what is heating - walls&floors or ancient romans, so a pronoun or a reference is required.

Thanks

This is a wrong question, as said by Ron in one of his posts.
Since, even answer choice (C) is also correct.
