IMO D

Logic = Up until recently = signifies present perfect tense = have+past participle = have sheltered

leading = present participle = correctly modifies the subject of the preceding clause = Inuit people

Option A = sheltering = should be have sheltered

Option B = changes the meaning of the sentence

Option C = In times that are recent = passive

Option E = wrong modifier. Although not too sure about this option completely.

OA?

Until recently .... This means Times before recent.

For ex, Until 1900 ... refers to time before 1900.
Untill tomorrow ... refers to time till before tomorrow.

Going by this logic ... B,C are wrong.

Out of A,D and E. A is the best because

D: have sheltered incorrectly refers to present perfect.

* Until recent times is wordier than Until recently.
* leading a nomadic existence is wrong.

D. Up until recently, the Inuit people, leading a nomadic exis-
tence, have sheltered.
E. Until recent times, leading a nomadic existence, the Inuit people

IMO D

Only A and D can be a possible correct answer.
Though "Up until recently" in D sounds redundant but if we read the sentence it talks about an action which started in past and is still continuing, So i think
"have sheltered" should be used instead of "sheltering".

OA??

Up Until recently means time before recent - So the action cannot continue now. It has to be past.

A.Until quite recently, Inuits led a nomadic existence, sheltering in igloos, the ice-block domes that are peculiar to northern-central Canada, and in structures made of stones, bones, driftwood, sods and skins.

D.Up until recently, the Inuit people, leading a nomadic existence, have sheltered in igloos, the ice-block domes that are peculiar to north-central Canada, and in structures made of stones, bones, driftwood, and skins.

Plz go thru the bolded parts. A makes sense.
