Currently, y percent of the members on the finance committee are women and next month, z percent of the men on the finance committee will resign. If no other personnel changes occur, then after the resignations next month, the men who remain on the finance committee will represent what percent of the total finance committee members?


A)(100)(100 - z)(100 - y)/100^2 - z(100 - y)

B)(100 - z)(100 - y)/100

c)(100 - z)(100 - y)

D)zy/100 - z

E)z(100 - y)/100

how to solve this type of problem in exactly 2 min

I couldn't do it in less than 2 mins though.. it took me almost 5 minutes.
Here goes the solution:
Let the % of males be m, then m+y = 100
and let the new % of females be y' after the resignation, then we have m(1-z/100)+y'=100.
Solving above two
y' = 100-(100-y)(1-z/100).
The % of males would be 100-y' = 100-100+(100-y)(1-z/100)=(100-y)(100-z)/100.

Answer is A. i.e. (100)(100 - z)(100 - y)/100^2 - z(100 - y)

As suggested by Mitch Use values.

Before reading the solution posted by Mitch, I also started with easy numbers..

I took -- Y= 50
Z= 10
Total members at the start = 100

lets say total member = 100 = men+ women
women = y
men = 100-y
now after resignation number of men = (100-y)(100-z) / 100

after z percent men resigns num the comittee strength = 100 - (100-y)z/100
=> 100 - z + yz/100

so the men who remain on the finance committee will represent what percent of the total finance committee members?

(100-y) (100-z) / (100 * (100 - z + yz/100 )
=>

hence A
