IMO C.

The underlined part of the sentence is modifier and it should modify the noun immediately following the comma.

A) This option means that researchers were accomplished through the use of the electron microscope. That is not the intended meaning.

B) Option B changes the meaning because it drops the word 'Primarily'.

C) Correct option

D and E are unnecessarily wordy and meaningless.

Hope that helps.
