Hi
I am an Indian male engineer working in Risk consulting for Oil & Gas industry. My Job profile is providing risk management (Technical) solutions for the Oil and gas industry. I have been a project Manager/Lead for some big projects and have lead/leading a team of 2-3 engineers. Consulting experience includes working for all top companies in Oil and gas (Asia, Middle East and UK)
Total experience 6 years (by the time I apply in 2014). 4 years experience in India (with some international travel/projects) and working in UK from last 2 years. Other than work, I have experience in helping my father with his manufacturing business (edible oil), until he shut it down in 2008 and have also tried my hands at a start up in risk consulting with one of my colleague.
B.E. (Chemical engg) - GPA 3.5
I have also done some work for charity, non-profit, etc, but do not have the necessary documents to prove it.
My target schools are (in order) LBS, INSEAD, ISB
Post MBA plan is to enter marketing/strategy/Market survey in oil and gas/Manufacturing. I also have my eyes on consulting, but couldn't make up my mind yet.
Can you evaluate my profile in general and provide some tips as to what area i can improve on and some suggestion regarding my post MBA goals ?

Also, I assume the Gmat score I should target is around 700. Is that right?

Thank you!

Thank you!
Yes, you should target at least a 700, and a 720+ to be extra safe.

Beyond that you should be competitve for the schools you listed given your profile - you have a solid professional career working outside your home country (Indian working in the UK) and I'm sure given your industry you're also working with colleagues and partners from around the world, which is basically what these Euro schools tend to value more than the US schools.

From here, the only thing is to focus on doing the best you can on your applications - there's no assurances, but you should have enough of a shot that they're worth a serious shot. What I do recommend though is to a few more schools: around 4-6 total, as beyond a certain point it's a numbers game and you want maximize your odds by applying to a sufficient number of schools. Maybe look at Oxford or Cambridge as well.

Good luck on the GMAT

Hi Chetan_7927,

Generally speaking, your professional experience and profile is quite strong! Not only is it compelling and diverse, it's also in an industry that is not IT. In all honesty not being in IT is a great thing for an Indian applicant. Also, your diversity of geographies (UK and India) will go a long way in helping you stand out. It shows adcoms that you understand international markets and also know how to work in different cultures. I'm not going to reiterate everything in your post but you have definitely got a profile that would be competitive at your target schools.

You mentioned you were active in charities and non profits but didn't have the documents to prove it? I'm not entirely sure what you mean here in that no school asks for documentation to prove involvement. However, what kind of involvement do you have in these organizations? Any leadership positions? If not, then in the year between now and apps in 2014, try to expand your involvement and find some experiences that really stand out.

As for your short/long term goals, they are logical and also set you up for a strong "why an MBA" component. If you're not sure about consulting, that's ok. You don't need to mention it in your essays if you don't have a compelling story behind it. Besides, your current short/long term goals are interesting and break the standard "I want to go into banking or consulting" mold. So in that regard, I support the goals you've put forward!

Finally, as for your GMAT score, yup - 700+. Preferably 720 but given you have a different background a 700+ may do. But aim for 720+.

I hope this helps you with a general assessment of your of your profile. If you have specific questions or any follow ups, just let me know!

Alex & Ritwik

Thanks a ton for the review and good words for my profile.

Alex,
Yes, definitely, i should add more schools to my list. Working on the same. But i guess, at the end it all boils down to what my GMAT score will be.

Ritwik,
My bad, the sentence about documents to prove extra-curricular activities was stupid. Apart from work, i am involved in charities like marathons, etc. Also, the captain of a cricket club, hope this goes in my favour.

Thank you once again!

Hey there,

Happy to help! You're on the right track thinking ahead a full year out from applications. Believe it or not, that's pretty rare. As for your extracurriculars, those are good ones to have. Charity work coupled with athletic interests is a combination that not only shows involvement, but also gives you an interesting bank of experiences to pull from.

Good luck!

Hi Chetan,

With 700+ GMAT score, you may give a shot in LBS, INSEAD & ISB. 6+ yrs. of work experience including international exposure is an ideal phase of your career to apply in b-school(s). You have an avg. GPA and ECs, therefore would suggest you to write good essays and exhibit leadership skills, achievements at work place, ability to work with others and additional aptitudes during final interviews.

Let me know if you require any further assistance. You may PM your details for free profile evaluation and school selection.

Regards
Erina
