In a move that surprised many political analysts, Republicans were forced to yield to conservative Christians demanding that they should modify their party platform to reflect public concerns about social issues, including abortion.

B. demanding it to
C. and their demand to
D. who demanded that it
E. who demanded it to

OA is D

Can anyone explain what does it refer to.

Can you please cite the source of this question...

OA does not look correct....there is no referent for "it"....since republicans is plural and uses plural verb "were"

D is the best option of them all. Though I agree instead of "it" this should be "they" = plural = republicans

Otherwise, if we ignore that.

We cannot use "demanding" = present participle = modifies the subject of the clause, but it is the Christians who demanded not the Republicans.

"who" correctly refers to Christians

"demanded that" = subjunctive mood = use of infinitive without "to" + base form of the verb

"it modify" [which should be "they modify"]

Hence D.

"it" should be pointing to Republicans which is plural so in place of"it" we should use "they" . Is this correct explanation of eliminating (E)
