If a number when divided by 296 gives a remainder 75, find the remainder when the same number is divided by 37?

That is a wrong conclusion. Take simple numbers and cross check.
If we have the number 64 and divide it by 3, we get remainder as 1
Now 64 is the multiple of 8. If we divide 8 by 3 we get remainder as 2.

If the new divisor is already a proper factor of the old divisor, then the old remainder can be taken as the new dividend; as in this case, 37 is already a proper factor of the old divisor 296, hence the old remainder 75, can be taken as the new dividend, and since 2 times 37 is 74, the new remainder is [spoiler]1[/spoiler].
