Melody bought four boxes of red and green Christmas tree ornaments. Each box contained a dozen ornaments. There was an average of two broken ornaments in each box. Three of the boxes had only one broken ornament each. How many ornaments were broken in the other box?

4 boxes, 2 broken ornaments in each box on average so total of 8 broken ornaments of which 3 are in the first 3 boxes. Leaves 5 broken ones for the last box.

Total broken ornaments = Avg broken * no. of box = 2 *4 =8

Broken ornaments:
Box 1 = 1
Box 2 =1
Box 3 = 1
Box 4 = Total broken - (Box 1+2+3) = 8 -3 = 5
