Recommended books ?

by pjg09 » Mon Sep 10, 2012 1:03 am
Hi,

I live in Hong Kong and I plan to write the GMAT exam on 20th Nov - I am staying-at-home currently, and can devote 4-5 hrs daily. I am looking to buy some recommended books from Amazon and get it bulk shipped to HK, as there is a huge mark up on those available locally - plus just a few names are usually in stock.

I Need some strong recommendations for the 'must haves'. I am an Engineer by academics and a Programmer/Analyst by profession(6 yrs of work ex), making quant my stronger area than verbal; though I am yet to give the first GMAT Prep exam - which would give a more accurate report of my strengths & weaknesses.

From what I have read, here is a list that I have tentatively compiled -
OG13
MGMAT NP, Geometry, Advanced, SC
Power Score CR
Veritas Probability, RC

Any extra to add/subtract from the above ? Please suggest some good ones particularly for Verbal/Probability/Permutation Combination/Statistics.

How about practice tests? any particular name that most closely replicates the real one? I intend to give one test every 7th day, so as to get a week each time for review/practice/improve.

Lastly, how to go about the AWA? Just by googling/reading articles/free resources, or I need to buy a book for that too? I do have the ARCO GMAT CAT answers to the real essay questions 3rd edition.

Since I am not working right now, I don't have the bandwidth to invest in every good book out there. I just want to make sure I have enough that just about covers all Q & V aspects with high quality content - concepts/tests/tips, and most closely replicates the real thing.

Thanks a lot in advance!

You need two types of resources:
1. a book with theory/ lessons OR an online course
2. tests - at best the OG 13 edition

What I would recommend is working with the OG only after you have completed a full theoretical course. The Official Guide is a great resource for practice but not a very good one to learn and review the basic concepts tested in the GMAT.

Thanks Kasia for your inputs. I will straightaway get the OG13. For theory, I am more comfortable with self study, so any must haves for that?

Thanks

Based on reviews and suggestions, I follow different book for each topic for theories and concept.

For:
1)Quant Concepts - Maths Bible (I have soft copy, if you need I can attach here)
2)SC - Manhattan SC Guide 5th Edition (Best one that anyone would recommend)
3)CR - Powerscore CR Bible OR Manhattan CR Guide (I prefer Manhattan CR)
4)RC - I cannot comment as I only worked with Kaplan's approach(Kaplan Premier). I found it suitable for me.
5)For more and more practice questions, as earlier suggested - OG13 is best, and if you need more practice ques later on you can purchase 'Quant Review', 'Verbal Review' and 'GMAT Prep Question Pack1'. All these are official GMAC products so gives better idea of actual GMAT ques.

All The Best!!
