The Quechuans believed that all things participated in both the material level and the mystical level of reality, and many individual Quechuans claimed to have contact with it directly with an ichana (dream) experience.
(A) contact with it directly with
(B) direct contact with it by way of
(C) contact with the latter directly through
(D) direct contact with the latter by means of
(E) contact directly with the mystical level due to

Once you read all the options, you would easily know that "it" is ambiguous

Eliminate A and B

We need direct and not directly

in other words we need an adjective instead of an adverb

Eliminate C & E

Hence D.

In D - by the means of - though correct but awkward.

as parallel chase has mentioned ... the contact is direct(thus we need an adjective)

imo:D...

but D is still awkward as often i have seen "by means of" considered wordy in gmat!!

is this question from 1000Sc??? if yes ..better ignore it!!!

(C) contact with the latter directly through

As written in this post, c) should be correct.
However, during my test, I didn't even consider c) because it stated contact with the last directly through.

So, incorrectly copied answer-choices cause a lot of confusion.

I personally had to choose between b and d.

The OA is d.

alway check grammar before check meaning logic, or you die

lest check grammar

"it" is ambiguous. A, B out

"due to" to say about reason, not vehicle. E out

lets check meaning logic

"directly" modify "have" . This is not logic. C out
