taking common

10^2(10^6 -1)/10^3(10^4 - 1)

1 is of very less value in comparison to 10^6 and 10^4
neglecting 1

10^6* 10^2/ 10^3 * 10^4

=10

How would I know on G day to get the most common instead of doing the most often way of


10^8-10^2/10^7-10^3=

10^6/10^4=

10^2

Guess my question is, what stands out in the question for you to know to solve it using the most common?

smclean: 10^8 - 10^2 does not equal 10^6. You've just divided instead of subtracted :)

To demonstrate:
10^8 - 10^2 = 100000000 - 100 = 99999900.
whereas
10^8 divided by 10^2 = 100000000 / 100 = 1000000, or 10^6.

What you want to do instead is factor the exponents of 10 ("pull out the tens").
