How is it that if the ratio of men to women is 2/5 that the total student body of men would be 2/7 and the for women total it would be 5/7.
How do I come up with the ratio as a total?

Say m = number of male students
w = number of women students
You get the ratio:
m/w = 2/5, making m = 2w/5.
The total number of students is m + w and you replace m with 2w/5, getting 2w/5 + w = total. This means that 7w/5 = t or that w = 5/7 * t. m will be 1 - 5/7 * t = 2/7 * t
