If p1 and p2 are the populations and r1 and r2 are the numbers of representatives of District 1 and District 2, respectively, the ratio of the population to the number of representatives is greater for which of the two districts ?
(1) p1 > p2
(2) r2 > r1

The OA is C, but I got it as E.
[spoiler]p1 = 8, p2=4, r1=2,r2=1, ratios are same and both conditions are satisfied
p1=10, p2=3, r1=6, r2=1 ratios are different and both conditions are satisfied.[/spoiler]

Where have I gone wrong or is the OA wrong.

Hey GMATTRANT, ur Qs is -
If p1 and p2 are the populations and r1 and r2 are the numbers of representatives of District 1 and District 2, respectively, the ratio of the population to the number of representatives is greater for which of the two districts ?
(1) p1 > p2
(2) r2 > r1
My approach will be -
Population : Representative = p1/r1 and p2/r2. Now we have to check whether p1/r1 > p2/r2 or vv; right? But to know between two numbers when especially they are fractions, which one is greater you have to know about the both fact whether deno and num of each fraction are greater than the other of the other fraction. So C is the correct option to chose.
Now going back to ur approach, u took -
p1 = 8, p2=4, r1=2,r2=1, ratios are same and both conditions are satisfied
p1=10, p2=3, r1=6, r2=1 ratios are different and both conditions are satisfied.
In ur example also, u have taken the values of both deno and num of the frac. Now if u say in ur first example, they are coming same that is a diff issue at all. This Qs asks for the fact whether it is possible to find out which ratio will be greater. In worst case (in ur 1st example), it becomes equal. But this is a gap in the Qs, u can say... :wink: :cry:

I have posted the solution of the same problem in another topic and acc. to me the OA is exactly correct...I am giving you the link of that topic here..
check the solution and she whether you are satisfied or not.

Also taking your cases just check out your values your given cases actually don't satisfy the condition..
If you read the second statement carefully, its written as r2 > r1... and in both of your cases you have given r1 > r2.
