When dealing with ratios, make sure to consider the total as well. If the given ratio is 5:3, there are in essence 5+3=8 different pieces.
Each piece is 32000/8 = 4000
Therefore the husband's share is 4000 * 5 = 20000
And the son's share is 4000 * 3 = 12000

For every $8, the husband gets $5 and the son gets $3.
In other words, the son gets 3/8 of the money.
3/8 of 32,000 = (3/8)(32,000) = $12,000
