Can anyone please expalin me when to use insteead of and when to use rather than ??

I would opt A.
"rather than" is better but "at" makes it inconsistent

The answer should actually be D... the bonding is not effected AT a series...

I just know few
rather than" is used indicate the preference of one over other..
instead of is not used generally with infinitives.(to go home….instead of to be confined)
members of the jury: they can go home or(to) be confined to a hotel.

Here rather than at sounds weird.
