Rather than continue to produce most of the items necessary for subsistence, a growing number of farm families during the first decades of the nineteenth century began to specialize in the production of grain or cotton and to use the cash proceeds from selling their crops for buying necessities.

(A) selling their crops for buying
(B) the sales of their crops for buying
(C) their selling of crops so as to buy
(D) their selling crops for buying of
(E) the sale of their crops to buy

what is wrong with other options?

I'm no expert, just trying to work on my skills. If I've made any mistakes please bear with me.

Hi hemant_rajput,

This SC is built around a 2-part idiom phrase:

from ______ to ________

You'll notice the word "from" appears right before the underlined portion, so it can't be changed.

Eliminate A, B and D

Answer C is wordy ("so as to buy"), redundant (farm families is the subject, we don't need the word "their") and clunky (it just sounds *wrong*).

Final Answer: E

what is wrong with other options?

Few points that might help -
1) By word "Proceeds" the author means the income generated by SALE of something.
2) SELLING v/s SALE: "Selling" usually denotes some action which is ongoing/continuous in nature. Whereas "Sale" denotes something in general. Eliminates A/C/D
3) Subject in both options B & E is "CROPS". We need verb "SALE". Eliminate option B. Also, "To buy" is preferred over "Buying".
Correct Answer: B
