One of the more reliable methods of determining regional climatic conditions in prehistoric periods is to examine plant pollen trapped in glacial ice during ancient times. By comparing such pollen samples with spores taken from modern vegetation, scientists can figure out approximately what the weather was like at the time of pollen deposition. Furthermore, by submitting the prehistoric samples to radiocarbon dating techniques, we can also determine when certain climatic conditions were prevalent in that portion of the globe.

My answer: E
Situation:
1. Comparing glacial pollen to modern vegetation tells you climate.
2. Use RC dating to determine pollen age.
Therefore, can tell when particular climate was prevalent

A. RC dating doesn't tell you anything about the glacier, only the pollen.
B. Again, glacier itself is not part of the scientific process here.
C. If that were the case, then there is no point of reference, hence invalidating 1.
D. Process of pollen deposition is not mentioned anywhere.
E. (1) assumes one-to-one (or many-to-one) correlation between climate and vegetation.
