R1 vs R2 Applications

I'm planning my applications for 2013. I have five schools that I'm looking to apply to but I'm torn about what order (i.e. R1 vs R2) I want to apply for.

I'm looking at applying to: MIT, Kellogg, LBS, Ross and Johnson. I've listed them in declining order of where I feel I might get accepted.

In terms of where I'd ideally like to go it's a toss up between Kellogg and LBS.

Anyone have any recommendations as to which round I should apply to my schools?

How is it that you feel that it'll be relatively easier for you to get into MIT than to get into Johnson? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Are you an international applicant?

My understanding is that MIT was a more challenging acceptance than Johnson based on marks/GMAT etc.

It depends how prepared you are at the moment. Have you taken your GMAT? If yes,are you happy with your score or do you plan to retake it? If you are done with your GMAT, why wait for the R-2, go ahead and begin working on your essays, resume, and recommendation letter etc. to apply in R-1. You need at least 3-4 months for the complete application process.

in a perfect world, if you could submit your best applications in round 1, you would position yourself best. however, if you are not ready by R1 do not force it!

My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

You are early enough on at this point that if you start working now or even June when the questions are released you can make all schools in Round 1, and there's no reason for you not to do so. It's not only to your advantage in terms of chances and scholarships, but also having all five schools done in R1, allows you the best range of choices should the best or the worst happen (i.e. if you get in nowhere, you can add schools for R2, if you get in everywhere, you don't have to wait for the next round to make your decision)
