Question Regarding Community Service

Hello

I have a very specific question related to community service. I quit my job 6 months back and since then have been volunteering work in a private hospital (Not a non-profit organization) in Mumbai, India. I decided to volunteer work in a private hospital because i wanted to help people and contribute to my community and at the same time gain some experience in administrative work. I have a 3 years of experience in Information Technology (IT) field and I am interested in perusing MBA in IT or IT related MBA's.

My question to you are:

1> will my volunteer work in private hospital considered community service by admission committee?

2> Can I put my volunteer work experience in my resume while applying to MBA programs?

2> As I took a break from work to do volunteer work will that be taken negatively by the admission committee?

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Ami

Hi Ami,

Thanks for your post. Please see my comments below:

Can you give me a little more context on the type of work you are doing at the hospital? Are you working with patients or caregivers? Or is this an administrative role?

2> Can I put my volunteer work experience in my resume while applying to MBA programs?

You will need to address your gap in employment. You can certainly put this on your resume, although you will need to make it quite clear that this is a volunteer/unpaid position.

2> As I took a break from work to do volunteer work will that be taken negatively by the admission committee?

You'll need to explain your reasons for making this transition to the admissions committee. I suggest that you write a brief optional essay for all of your applications explaining why you left your job in the IT field to pursue this volunteer opportunity. The adcom may question your reasons for leaving an IT job if your goal is to continue to work in the IT field post MBA. You will need to have a solid explanation for this in your optional essay.

Best,

Stacey
