Quant Progress - Review & Suggestions

by yourshail123 » Fri Aug 03, 2012 12:34 pm
Hi,
I started my Quant prep 15 days back, and went through the OG12 topic wise.

Here is the Summary:
Problem Solving >> 199 / 230 (86.5%)
- I have noticed that almost 19 answers were incorrect due to Silly Calculations or just that I missed a part of ques or interpreted incorrectly. However, rest of them I got it as for Concept
Data Sufficiency >> 131 / 174 (75.28%)
- Again, here 16 incorrect answers were due to the Careless calculations and rest of them (what I feel) I could not interpret the statements into equations at times.
Overall, I kept almost 70 questions still on Concept Review.

I suppose the above count for Silly mistakes is huge.
Please advise on how can I better avoid my careless mistakes and how can I work better on the DS segment.

Materials available:
1) GMAT Quant Review 2nd Edition
2) GMAT Question Pack I
3) OG12 and OG13
4) Maths Bible

Note:- I am scheduled for GMAT Exam on 6th Oct, and have to prepare for Verbal as well, which is bit weak as compared to Quant and need to concentrate more on to it.

Are you timing yourself while completing these problems? Without knowing more about your situation, I would guess that your careless mistakes are a result of rushing. Timing is what makes the GMAT so tricky. You need to be able to solve the problems fast enough to finish the section on time, but you also want to limit silly mistakes.

Yes, I do set timer; and save almost 2-3 minutes everytime.
So, I got here I would be more particular to give time on tricky questions henceforth.
But considering the DS section, I am not finding correct approach or I am not able to interpret the DS statements into equations correctly; then I try to assume things and rush ahead.
And might be I am saving a bit time there.
However, how should I progress further now considering the weak areas and material I have handy. How should I plan on Quant ahead.
