Based on recent box office receipts, the public's appetite for documentary films, like nonfiction books, seems to be on the rise.
A. like nonfiction books
B. as nonfiction books
C. as its interest in nonfiction books
D. like their interest in nonfiction books
E. like its interest in nonfiction books

IMO E

1.Comparison of nouns : like should be used.

2. Public's is a collective noun and therefore should be replaced by singular possessive pronoun 'its'.

A: is wrong as it seems to say documentary films like books.

C: as is preferred when comparing actions, here there is no action. it compares (public's interest in X) to (public's interest in Y). so as doesnt seem suitable here
(edited the earlier post)

E: no actions compared, so like seems better than "as" in C

have a question-dont u think that the use of "its" could be for appetite,not for public? I mean this "its" is ambiguous and can be referred both to public and appetite

Pretty well explained above. :)

@LalaB, the possessive its cannot refer to a non-possessive apetite. However, taking into account the pronoun references are mainly taken into account to get the most accurate meaning of a sentence. If its refers to apetite, the sentence is distorted and thus, it is logical for its to refer to public's.

Hope it helps. Please correct if I am wrong.
