Public access

by just_do_it » Fri Sep 19, 2008 5:00 pm
Public-access cable television was created in the 1970s as a means to derive public benefit from the laying of private television cables on public land.

from the laying of private television cables on public land
from laying private television cables on the public land
by the laying of private television cables on the public's land
from private television cables being laid on public land
by laying private television cables on land that was public

Please explain your answers. OA to follow after a couple of threads

My intuitive guess is A. LAYING OF.

There's a book called, ''Laying of the Atlantic Cable'' by Cyrus Field, therefore, ''laying of private teleVision'' is the best guess. 20% chance.

If i'm correct, my book will be entitled, ''The Laying of Ladies''.

Regards,

X was created to do Y.

C is out cos..... public's land.......

D is out cos ..... being laid

E is out cos...land that was public.......clumsy....

Now x was created to do Y.

To derive public benefit from..............

We need a noun phrase after from.........Hence the laying of......is correct.... Henc A. is correct

In B, laying television.......is a verb phrase........and is wrong.......

"to derive x from y" is the correct idiom, hence A
