The easiest reason to eliminate A is that which cannot be used to refer to women.

Another issue:
Each answer choice ends with a modifier that follows the VERB (work). Hence, the correct modifier must serve to describe HOW the women WORK. The modifier in A -- many of which are in middle management -- does not describe how the women WORK.

Unlike the modifier in A, the absolute phrase in the OA -- many of them in middle management and light industry -- does not include its own verb. The reason is that this absolute phrase serves to provide context for the PRECEDING ACTION: an overwhelming proportion of women WORK, many of them IN MIDDLE MANAGEMENT AND LIGHT INDUSTRY.
