Pronoun Ambiguity doubt

Hi All,

Can someone please tell how the answer could be D in this question....there seems to be no referent for Men.....note that people's name are there in the possesive....

Does pronoun reference thing does not apply to "men/women" ?

Black History month is observed in Feb,the month of Lincoln's Bday and the generally accepted month of Fredrick Douglass' birth,since they were each primary figures in the abolition of slavery.
a) since they were each
b) who were both
c) because both of whom were
d) because both men were
e) each of whom was one of the

The "pronoun reference thing" is not applicable here for Choice D since there are no pronouns in this choice.

You may be getting confused between use of common nouns and the pronouns - men/women are common nouns. In this sentence, instead of repeating the Proper nouns - Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass, a common noun "men" has been used to refer to both of them.
