First of all, very lovely job on your GMAT. Now that you have done so well, it is time for you to FORGET that test. It's over. Getting an 800 won't help you any more than your current score. Now you have to work on the other things, like writing amazing essays, getting as many applications as you can out by R1, etc. etc..

Not coming from IIT, being a little bit older, and coming as an Indian/Tech/Male, your last year's choice of schools was probably overly ambitious. And this year I would urge you to build a better mix of schools (stretch, competitive and safe) which will get you where you need to go.

There are still many things that are unclear to me in order to really evaluate where you stand: (i.e. do you have leadership exp? Did you work for the US bank in the US or India? What exactly were your achievements? How many promotions did you get? etc. etc.), and if you wanted a more precise evaluation I would suggest you drop us a line here: https://admissionado.com/mba/free-consultation/

Other than that BEFORE you do ANYTHING, get somebody to look at your applications from last year and do a Ding Review so you can restrategize yourself this year, and hope for better results. Have a look here: https://admissionado.com/mba/packages/a- ... -analysis/

If you have any other specific questions, or can give me more specific info, I can dig deeper into your profile,
Best,
JF

Thanks for the kind words, Jon. Also, I am hearing mixed reviews on these forums. Some say that there is not much difference between 710 and 730 because my verbal score dropped by one point. Some say that there is a BIG difference because 710 is 92%ile and 730 is 96%ile. Even a 4%ile is HUGE. It's really messy and confusing how people present their perspective on the same topic! It gets frustrating. :(

I applied to some of the schools you recommended in your post. :( I am not from IIT but from NIT. Do you think that would make a difference? I am not sure.

Do you think I should reapply to the schools that dinged me? The thing is that my age is now running against me. I am already 30. Please let me know your thoughts. I have also answered your questions below. Please suggest a list of schools that you think is good for me.

I have extensive leadership and product launch experience in over 9 countries. I have led teams of size 100+ people including MDs and regional CEOs

I currently work for the US bank in the US
Jon@Admissionado wrote: What exactly were your achievements?
I was promoted twice. Received a very prestigious Star award for completing products in time, when everyone thought that the ship would sink.

Two promotions in the last 5 years. The last promotion I got was in 2011. Another one is "probably" due early next year.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I am very impressed by the amount of leadership you say you have, and that in of itself is quite exceptional and should make you a potential candidate for Top 10 schools. And I am very curious why you didn't get accepted, or even invited to interviews. I would really love to see your essays, because my gut tells me either you messed something up, or didn't write about the right things in the right way.

You for sure can reapply to some schools, for all schools take reapplicants and the accept rate is about the same as it is for the general population. The KEY though is: what has IMPROVED since your last application. Let's assume you will get better essays and recs in this year... but still some CONCRETE improvement over the last year (like a promotion) will go a long way.

For the GMAT thing, it's complicated always. A 710 is good enough to get you in anywhere. This is the truth. And from there on, it's your profile that is getting you in. Will getting a 730 be better? SURE! And especially for a reapplicant who is obliged to show improvement. But the question is always one of payoff. Your time is limited as is your energy, so what will be more worthwhile? And it depends on so many things, I don't want to give you an easy answer (how good your essays are, how much time you would have to dedicate to it, how much better you might potentially do, how much you are willing to compromise on schools).

But like I said, from here on in, I think the place to start is to review all your applications from last year, and figure out what went wrong and how to make good on that.

Hope this helps!
