Profile evaluation

by ME2013 » Mon Sep 09, 2013 10:01 am
Hello,
I'd like to know if I have a chance of doing an MBA at a top 5 program. I attended a competitive Ivy League (HYP) and studied engineering. However my main concern is my 2.6 gpa which I attribute working part-time, leadership positions in student organizations, and financial problems at home. There are no excuses for my low gpa, but I know it's NOT indicative of my true intellectual potential. I am also a first generation college student, Latina and a female.

Do I have a chance?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, as a Latina, you will automatically have an edge in the process for tops schools, as you offer two areas of diversity in one package. Even with a lower GPA, if you can get a good GMAT score, you will definitely get their attention. GPA is probably the most flexible in terms of admissions requirements and the fact you attended a top UG institution helps trump the GPA a bit, even if there is widespread grade inflation at these ivys. I would still go for the top, just perhaps put in an extra application or two. It's really all in how you position your story. Let us know if you need help.
