Profile Evaluation

by subha58 » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:19 pm
Hello,

Could you please evaluate my profile and let me know how realistic my chances are for a good school.

Personal Info - I am 32 years old and am an Indian citizen. I have been in the united states for the past 12 years. I am a mom of one year old twins.

BACHELORS - Major/GPA/School/Year: Computer Science & Engineering/ 3.2/ Sri Venkateswara College of Engg (University of Madras - India) / 2001

MASTERS - Accounting / 3.2/ University of Arizona (Tucson)/ 2004 (From 2001 to 2002 i was in the masters in computer science program - i did not finish it - i was unfortunately not doing well in it and additionally i did not find it interesting so i went for guidance counselling and changed my masters to accounting which i love.

Work exp: worked at Deloitte & Touche for 4 years as an aduitor (when i left i was an Auditor in charge) and PECO (Philadelphia electric company as an accountant for 2 years) I dont have my CPA.

GMAT - 730 (took it a few weeks ago)

Would I have any chance of making it to
1) Wharton School of Business
2) Indian School of Business

Thank you for your help!

Hey there,
Thanks for asking. Well, I would have to see your resume and get some more info form you about your work experience to give you a real evaluation, but based on what you wrote, the two schools you choose will likely be stretches for you. At 32, with only four years of work experience in accounting, plus coming from a relatively overrepresented country, it looks as if you are going to do an MBA to "Get back into the work force) which may not be strong enough a reason for top schools who can pick and choose from thousands and thousands of candidates.

You do have a great GMAT though, so that will help you out, but I would suggest looking at schools out of the Top 10 to have good chances of acceptance.

Hi Jon

Thank you for your reply. I also wanted to add that i have 6 years of experience (4 as an auditor and 2 as an accountant). But reading your response, i think the additional 2 years would not likely make a difference. Thank you for being honest.

Hey, well look, it always depends on what you have DONE in those years, and how successful you were, especially to others relative to your age and position. Now, I'm not saying Wharton or ISB are impossible, but that you should definitely not solely limit your strategy to those, because they are long shots given your pool and your age. You come from a huge and tough pool which in general scores awesomely well on the GMAT, so just have more experience or a great GMAT is not enough. That's why you need to balance out your "Dream schools" with a few more that are outside the top 10.
