PFB my profile. I am dividing into sections for ease of analysis:
1. Academic:
GPA: 3.5 (Chemical Engineering Degree, Good College - India)
GMAT: 680 Q:48 V:35(Re-taking in July, doing well on the practice tests 730-750 range. V:41-43, Q:50).
TOEFL(iBT): 115.
Additional Courses during engineering: IPR course from The Indian Law Institute, recieved A+.
Positions Held:
a. Class Representative(part of 12 member Student Government). Via Elections
b. Member, Movie Club(part of the Youth body). Via Appointment (acad performance)
c. Official Commentator- Inter-university sports meet. Via Competition.
Other Activities:
a. Contributed articles to the College Magazine all four years.
b. Helped classmates study certain subjects (20-30 students at a time).
c. Created a self-help group for students weak in Interviewing skills and
soft skills required for successful placements.
d. Delivered the commencement speech at the Inter-university sports meet.
Negative Points: GPA was very low in the beginning (adjustment issues). Recovered by 3rd year.
2. Professional:
Experience: 3 Years.
Industry: Information Technology
Employer: Fortune 500 company, 100,000 employees, $6 Billion revenue
Nature of Work - Technical, sometimes business(stroke of luck and supporting manager).
Achievements/ Differentiating factors:
1. Carried out market research for my department with guidance of a business consultant.
2. Promoted 6 months before peers.
3. Contributed BoKs (book of knowledge - used as a device to capture knowledge).
4. Provided domain trainings via presentations to new teammates.
5. Selected Think-tank member and then a year later Facilitator for Global intra-organization
e-zine.
6. Was a Point-of-contact between department and recruiting team. Managed the interactions
and resources during recruitment drives.
7. Participated in a Cultural Fashion Show and a Project Showcase event, for which I created
videos, presentations, demos; also designed banners and posters.
8. Alongwith day-to-day work, completed various Harvard Manage Mentor courses. Just thought they'd
be good for my future
Applied things I learned in various aspects of my life.
9. Won a leadership marathon - It was a competition part of leadership training - consisted of
three rounds -> Group discussion, Declamation and Debate. (for this I have no certificate)
Negative point: Young and less experience than most.
3. Community Service/ Social Welfare activities:
Everything is related to education.
a. Sponsored a child's education. Not much contribution other than a couple of visits. But, I just thought it best to make an impact in one child's life, then try to help many without focus.
b. I have been through the admissions process before and it can be daunting. So, helping colleagues and friend with the admissions process, keeping them updated with latest information and guiding them to useful resources on the internet. Arranging for group meets at admissions events, etc.
c. Started a free test-prep initiative, to help those who cannot afford the cost of coaching classes. Inspired by the Khanacademy.org. Has reached about 200 people. Which is not much, but any help is better than no help i guess.
Negative points - No real social welfare experience. Nothing that shines bright.
4. Personal
-> Won the Inter-school English Essay Writing Competition at age 15.
-> Love to write. Have a couple of blogs. One is personal and another discusses personal finance, burning issues of the day, etc.
-> Love to read just as much. Fiction and non-fiction. Especially biographies of great leaders.
-> Fan of the Scrips National Spelling Bee (yepp we get most of american programs here in India)
and generally any intellectual competition.
-> Wrote a couple of business plans in college. In fact the initiative started by me for providing
free test-prep ? I am thinking of best ways to generate enough profit for it to not only sustain
but to grow and reach more people.
5. Short-Term and Long-Term Goals
a. Get into a top MBA program. Prefer general management prog with second year marketing electives.
b. Work in an offline advertising company for atleast 5 years.
c. Set up my own offline ad firm 5-7 years post MBA.
Please evaluate my profile for ivy league schools. And please tell me what are my realistic chances of getting in to top-20 US programs with Scholarship!
