Hi,

I just completed my GMAT, and now I am staring into the abyss of deciding where to apply. I am fully financing all my applications (and school in general), so I want to ensure I make smart decisions about schools to apply to.

My list of "favorites" so far includes: Wharton, Kellogg, HBS, Fuqua, and Booth. I'm looking to add one that is more of a sure bet to the list. I want to go into emerging markets healthcare, so I've picked a few with notable healthcare management programs or concentrations.

Here's some of my info:

Degree: Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Emphasis - Top 20 US engineering school, CA
GPA: 3.85/4.00
GMAT: 720; 37V/50Q 6.0AWA
Employment: 2 year development program at Fortune 100 Pharmaceutical Company; 1 additional year in medical devices division

Volunteerism: Assistant coach, U-10 Girls Soccer - 1 year, 2 years of Alumni Admissions Fairs for undergraduate university; past activities include Boys and Girls Club volunteer, company newsletter editor, multiple small scale children's events

Hobbies: Avid runner - multiple 5k & half-marathons, snowboarding, soccer, hiking

Undergraduate leadership/awards: Full tuition scholarship, research scholarship, chemical engineering department leadership award, president of both Tau Beta Pi and AIChE, Finance VP for sorority, secretary for Mortar Board

Random: Dual citizenship USA/UK

Anyone want to offer any advice on whether I am competitive for the programs I am interested in? Any recommendations for other schools? Thank you!

Chelsea,

Congrats on your 720 GMAT. That (and your superlative GPA) puts you in the game. Your dual citizenship, distinctive goals, somewhat distinctive industry, rigorous and excellent undergrad record, and extracurricular leadership (soccer) make you a strong candidate. But whether you are an HBS-level candidate will depend on the depth of your leadership and how distinctively you can frame your profile. Based on what you gave me, I think HBS and Wharton will be reach schools, while Kellogg and Booth will be competitive schools, with Duke as a semi-sure bet (or better 'high confidence') school. I would suggest Michigan and UNC (both with strong healthcare resources) as other potential high-confidence schools. Also consider Tuck, which has launched a new healthcare delivery program.
