Profile Evaluation Advice

by kwb231 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 6:54 am
Hi,

I'm thinking of applying to R1 or R2 for class of 2016.
I was wondering if you could evaluate my profile and see if the schools I'm thinking of can be a possibility or not. I'm thinking of HBS, Stanford, Columbia, LBS, HKUST, and INSEAD.

I'm a native Korean.
I graduated from NYU Stern in May 2011 with GPA of 3.211
Freshman 2.63, Sophomore 2.33, Junior 3.83, Senior 3.65
Major GPA: Finance 3.75 Business Econ 3.87

As you can see I clearly slacked off during the first 2 years and tried to catch up after my 2 years of Korean military.

GMAT wise I've recently started studying and I'm hitting 720 on practice tests. I'm aiming to hit at least 750 with intensive practicing before I apply anywhere.

I currently have 24 months of work experience in wealth management.
After graduation, I went to Hong Kong to work for Oppenheimer Asia Investments Limited and then I moved to Oppenheimer's New York office after almost 1 year of experience. I started out as a financial associate in wealth/asset management and got promoted to Associate Director.
Recently I moved to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management with the entire team in May.

I can get solid recommendations from my bosses (ED and VP) but haven't been very active in extracurricular due to frequent job changes.

I'm looking to work in industrial companies rather than finance after MBA and the reason for choosing HBS and Stanford is because of their strengths in management and great global alumni networks.

Please let me know what I should do increase my chance of getting into top these tier MBAs.

Thanks in advance

Hey man, thanks for dropping by!
Looks like you are doing veeeery good so far. Coming from MS will make things a lot easier for you as it is one of the feeder firms for top MBAs, including HBS, even if there are stronger teams (PE for example)... but still MS is MS. Get that 720+ (you don't need more than a 720 really, for any school) and you will be in excellent shape. Your work experience is a wee bit on the low side, and the lack of breadth in terms of ECs/ volunteer work is a bit of a shame (and if you decide to delay one year, DO work on those), but you do have your Korean Military experience which you can tap for good stories/leadership/breadth, and I'd suggest you do that.

I think your school list is a little bit on the tough side, but still fair, and if you can get some fantastic essays, then you should have a good shot. (And what about your alma mater?)

One thing that's not entirely clear to me is how your goals fit with your school choice really (Okay, HBS and Stanford never did anybody wrong! but still... :). I mean there are schools which are stronger in "industry" (INSEAD is one) that either Stanford or HBS, and in general it depends on which industry you are aiming at (and they can sometimes be very regional), so I feel like your goals are a bit vague to me at the moment (plus they don't necessarily fit with your experience), and something still needs to be worked out here, before you apply.

Thanks for the reply Jon.

If you mean college when you asked about alma mater, I went to New York University, Stern School of Business.

I'll give you better picture of my future goal and hopefully you can advise me on which schools would be the best fit to achieve my goal. My family has a real estate development and construction company back in Korea and my ultimate goal is to go back and grow the company globally (the construction company has a global presence). The reason for my choosing to go to MBA is to 1) change my course of career to fit the future goal and 2) meet great people and gain alumni network that pretige MBAs have. I chose HBS and Stanford because I heard they are strong in general management area. Let me know if you have other programs that you would think would be suitable for me.

Thanks!

I did mean NYU. I was just wondering why you weren't applying there (schools tend to be kind to their alumni).

So, a family business! Great stuff! How big is the business? If it's big and serious, then this is great news (there's no one that B-schools love more than serious and excellent candidates who are heirs to a global business)

Going for prestige is a good idea. But think of other M7 schools too. They're all great.
