A lawyer charges her clients $200 at first hour of her time and $ 150 for each additional hour. If the lawyer charged her new client $1,550 for a certain number of hours of her time , how much was the average charge per hour ?

here is the question with options

A lawyer charges her clients $200 for the first hour of her time and $150 for each additional hour. If the lawyer charged her new client $1550 for a certain number of hours of her time, how much was the average (arithmetic mean) charge per hour?

A. $155
B. $160
C. $164
D. $172
E. $185

To find the average charge per hour, we need to know the total number of hours that the lawyer charged this particular client.
Now, total charge = $1550. From this we subtract $200, since thats what the lawyer charges for the first hour.

Therefore, 1550 - 200 = 1350. Now divide this by 150 since the lawyer charges $150 for every hour after the first hour.

Therefore, 1350/150 = 9 hrs.

Add, the initial 1 hour. Therefore, the lawyer charged her client $1550 for 10 hours, which gives us an average of $155/hr. And that is option A.

Basically the charges of the lawyer consists of 2 components , a fixed charge of $ 200 thereafter a variable charge of $ 150

So , the equations stands as follows-

1550 = (150 X a ) + 200

1350 = 150a

a = 9

So the client used 9 additional hour and along with 1 hour @ $ 200

So in 10 hrs charges the client had to pay is = $ 1550

Hence average charges per hour is $ 155

The answer choices represent the average charge per hour.
Since all of the values in the problem are INTEGERS, the correct answer choice must divide evenly into $1550, the total amount charged.
Only A divides evenly into 1550.

The correct answer is A.

We can let n = the total number of hours of the lawyer's service to her client and create the equation:

1550 = 200 + 150(n - 1)

1350 = 150n - 150

1500 = 150n

10 = n

Thus, the average charge per hour was 1550/10 = 155 dollars.

Answer: A

Let total no of hours devoted by lawyer = n
Total charge = $1550
This implies --> 200(1) + 150(n-1) = 1550
Solving above, n=10

Average cost per hour = 1550/10 = $155/hr
