possessive pronoun can only refer to possessive noun.

"his" is possessive pronoun of "Arthur's".

now replace the noun with its pronoun in original sentence.

"though usually a calm person, arthur's patience was tried more than once by arthur's son's destructive behaviour" - Does it looks weird?

the corrected sentence remove this awkwardness.

This sentence belongs to a category of sentences that have modifier issue.

Though usually a calm person should be followed by who is this calm person. The original sentence nonsensically suggests that arthur's patience is the calm person, while it should clearly be Arthur.
