Price of Lunch

The price of lunch for 15 people was $207.00 including a 15% gratuity for service. What was the avg price per person, EXCLUDING the gratuity?

a. $11.73
b. $12.00
c. $13.80
d. $14.00
e. $15.87

I think your mistake is to think of the 15% as being 15% of 207, when the 15% are in fact 15% of the price without the gratuity.

You are looking for X :

X + 15/100 * X = 207

I would advise you to pick numbers :

12 * 15 = 180

15 / 100 * 180 = 27

180 + 27 = 207
