As the price of gasoline rises, which makes substituting alcohol distilled from cereal grain attractive, the prices of bread and livestock feed are sure to increase.

(A) which makes substituting alcohol distilled from cereal grain attractive
(B) which makes substituting the distillation of alcohol from cereal grain attractive
(C) which makes distilling alcohol from cereal grain an attractive substitute
(D) making an attractive substitution of alcohol distilled from cereal grain
(E) making alcohol distilled from cereal grain an attractive substitute

Please explain the answer

D, E - incorrectly modify the prices
B - awkward
C - changes the meaning of the sentence

E is the correct answer.
'Alcohal' rather than 'substituting alcohal' is the substitute.That leaves only C and E.And E correctly uses 'making' which showes that it is an ongoing process as the price rises.

When ever you see which, make sure it touches the word right before it. In other words, Is which referring to the word right before it. In this case which should refer to rises, which does not make sense. A,B,C out for me

Between D & E, D is awkward and wordier. Also sounds like passive voice to me.

A, B and C are wrong because of the modifier which. Ask the question what is which?

Infinitive form is required after the comma hence ans is between D and E

E stands as D is awkward.

The which touching rising yet modifying rising, as someone mentioned earlier, eliminates A,B and C.

Also, You are not substiting the distillationg or distilling of alcohol, you are substituting distilled alcohol. That knocks out B and C again, just another way and a meaning issues to definitely keep in mind. D states actively as if someone is making an attractive substitution, when you actually want to say that alcohol distilled from cereal grain is an attractive substitute. No one is actually doing any substitution.
