I would choose D to maintain parallelism.


to form the mud or clay into bricks, and, after some preliminary air drying or sun drying, to lay them

Ok,

A and D detailed analyis

D-Its right not due to parellelism . Infact, its wordy

as per the rules, in parallelism of infinitives, second "to" is optional and often better to eliminate

This is one of the reason, its not the most perfect choice

Most imp point why D is correct in pronoun usage
"them" correctly refers to Bricks and usage is unabmigous

A

They refers to the subject "the forming" which is wrong and changes the meaning.

so, lets weight

an optional rule missed v/s pronoun error

hence, revised IMO D

OA is D

to form..to lay is right

A is wrong because forming..they lais is not parallel

E is wrong because "that" is missing in the end of the sentence so it is not parallel
