here " The public's widespread belief " is singular - So the use of "their" and "they" are wrong. A,B and C are out.

E is wrong because if "have" as the subject is sigular.

Left with D.

Though Avik mentioned the answer correctly BUT "its" is referring to public's and NOT " The public's widespread belief "

public/b] is a collective noun and hence singular and i.e. D
