Evaluation

by mjjking » Mon Jun 25, 2007 7:13 am
Hi ya,
you may remember me, the italian folk who took 590 on his GMATPrep test before starting studying...
I took the GMAT official review diagnostic test at the beginning of the book, here's my scores:

Problem solving: 10
Data sufficiency: 16
Critical Reasoning: 14
Sentence Correction: 14
Reading Comprehension: 14

Does it mean anything to you? Is it good, bad or what?

It's not really possible to evaluate these diagnostic results. Taking actual practice tests (especially GMATPrep) is more useful...

How to go on?

by mjjking » Tue Jun 26, 2007 5:42 am
Hi,
I'm taking all the problems in the GMAT Official Review book. Quite a lots of problems in the math part are difficult, especially from number 130 on. When I don't know the answer, what should I do? How to procede?
thanks!

Manhattan GMAT CAT test 1

by mjjking » Thu Jun 28, 2007 8:15 pm
Hi there,
I've just taken the first Manhattan GMAT CAT test, after two weeks of study.

Before starting, my score with the MBA.cm GMATPrep was 590 (Q39,V31).
Now, my score has been 650 (Q43,V36). I want to understand if the score is more or less accurate or not... I answered correctly to 17 questions in the math section, and 24 in the verbal one. Does this mean something specific?
In your opinion, is the score accurate and reliable or not?
thanks!

It seems to be an improvement. Try not to read into your scores or how many you got wrong. Your primary focus should be analyzing your mistakes and picking up patterns of questions you get wrong.

Keep up the good work!

Really an improvement?

by mjjking » Fri Jun 29, 2007 1:34 pm
Mmm yes, I guess it's been a 60 points improvement. What I'd like to know: does this mean that I could REALLY score 650 in the real gmat today?

That's not really possible to predict, especially with third-party practice test software that isn't written by the makers of the GMAT. I would go out in a limb and guess that you should be in range of that, plus or minus 30 or 40 points.

But again, Manhattan GMAT cat tests are reliable and well done it seems to me, aren't they? Many questions were really difficult!

Yes you're absolutely right--Manhattan GMAT tests are really good, but at the same time they are not made by the makers the real GMAT.

From your test scores you should have two takeaways:

(1) You seem to be improving in performance in general
(2) You now have more data to diagnose patterns of success and areas to improve.

All the best!

Good, then what else I could do? I mean, I have the Official Review 11th edition, and I've gone through almost all the problems... What else could I do?

1) the standard deviation on our tests is in the low 50s
2) the standard deviation of the official test is about 30
3) the standard deviation of the GMATPrep tests has not been published, but we can assume it is somewhat higher than 30, though probably within 10-20 points
4) the vast majority of test takers get about half of the questions right and about half of the questions wrong in a section - it's not only possible to score a 650 with 17/37 right on the math, that's exactly what to expect. It's only as you move into the 700s or the lower 300s that you start to move away from the 50/50 pattern.
