For an MGMAT 650, yes.

Although remember that standard deviation just means you are most likely between 600-700, not definitely. Technically, it means you have a 2/3 chance of being between 600-700 and a 1/3 chance of being below or above that range.

2nd MGMAT

by mjjking » Wed Jul 04, 2007 2:06 pm
Hi, I took the second Manhattan GMAT practice test today, and I got 670, 45Q 36V... Even though I had to "educately guess" some questions in Q part, 3 of them turned to be right... Well, I really have to improve my math, but I don't know how! And then, MGMAT problems seem so hard! Is it just a feeling of mine or you have noticed it too?
thanls!

A lot of people think that our individual math qustions are a bit harder than the real test, but that is by no means universal. It's not unusual for people to get into timing problems on the math section and then they can really underperform. (We're trying to combat this by forcing you to figure out how to work with your timing on our tests - the fact that they're so hard means you have to figure out how to deal with timing ahead of time.) :)

fine

by mjjking » Sat Jul 07, 2007 3:27 pm
Hi again,
well, having difficult questions is fine, as long as the actual test work the same! I mean, I made about 6 questions wrong one after another, and still I was getting 700-800 level questions. does the real gmat work the same?
thanks!

Potentially, yes. It depends on the mix of experimental questions and what range you were in right before you had a string of wrong answers.

Other test

by mjjking » Sun Jul 08, 2007 9:49 am
Hi there,
I took another MGMAT test today and even though I felt more comfortably with that, I score only 630.

So, so far:
10 May, GMATPrep: 590
25 June, MGMAT: 650 (Q43, V36)
4 July, MGMAT: 670 (Q45, V36)
8 July, MGMAT: 630 (Q41, V35)

I'm a bit disappointed, but at least I'm pretty sure this is a result were luck played little part in! How do you think I can improve to reach a 650 minimum? I feel weak in word problems and in converting them into equations... uff, what to do?
thanks!

Your MGMAT tests are all within the 650 range; remember that our tests have a standard deviation of about 50 points (compared to about 30 points for the official test).

In terms of how to improve, you're really going to have to diagnose your strengths and weaknesses. Have you been running the test reports on your MGMAT tests? If not, do that and start making a list of the areas in which you either aren't getting enough right or you're taking too long. Go back and look at the individual questions and figure out what caused you to get that question wrong, spend too much time, or whatever. You really need to pick apart and analyze your performance.

Do pay attention to areas in which you think you're weak, of course - chances are you're right. But do the above analysis so you can actually see, via the hard data, what your strengths and weaknesses are.

Could you, yes - you're in the right range. (That doesn't mean you absolutely will, of course.)

I always tell everyone to assume they'll take it twice, just in case. So go into the first test assuming that this is just the dry run.

MGMAT 4

by mjjking » Sat Jul 14, 2007 7:01 am
Hi y'all! I've taken the fourth MGMAT test and I scored 640 (Q43,V35). I'm stuck with all the same scores, I cannot do better on the verbal part, if I scored 38-39 I'd be well over 650! Any suggestion on how to do it? I have two weeks to go and MUST score 650, should I postpone the test? Please note I live in Europe, and I won't be able then to take the test until mid September.
thanks guys!

I've just bought th Kaplan 2007 Premiere Guide to the GMAT... is that a good book? Are the problems challenging and similars to the GMAT ones?
thanks!

You're right in the range, so you may want to go ahead and take it to see if you get your score. The experience will give you a good idea of what to improve if you have to take it again.

Have you taken an official test before? The schools take the higher score, and most don't care if you take it 2 or 3 times, so as long as you'd be within that parameter, it's not a big deal to have taken it multiple times.

Re: improving in verbal, you need to know very specifically what your weaknesses are, across grammar rules for SC and question types for the other two. You can't improve if you don't know what you need to improve.

I'm not familiar with the Kaplan book, so I'll leave that for someone who has used it.

new date

Another Manhattan GMAT and another 640...! Well, the scores remain pretty the same (41-44 in Q and 35-36 in V). But if in math i make more or less the same kind of mistakes every time, in verbal I do not. For instance, some time I make almost every RC question right and almost all SC wrong, while the next time I make almost all the SC right and half of the RC wrong! CR is 50% almost aall the time... what to do and how?
thanks!

ps> my test is on August 20th!

You need to go and figure out why you made the mistakes you made for verbal. For every single question - go figure out why you fell into the trap of picking the wrong answer and why you thought the right answer was wrong. That's the only way to learn how NOT to fall into those same traps again.

mjj-

the math on the mgmats is harder than the regular test. It is great preparation though because you wont be time crunched on the real test. Keep practicing with mgmat.
