Postponing MBA admission

by Arsene Lupin » Sun May 31, 2009 12:33 am
Greetings our beloved consultants!

I'm planning to start my MBA in 2011. However, I would love to test the waters and apply to a couple of schools in 2010.

My problem is, what if I get admitted at these schools?

Can I postpone my admission one year? Or would I have to apply again?

I got three universities in mind so far:

- Cornell
- Yale
- Carnegie Mellon

I have no intention in starting in 2010. In fact, it is almost impossible for me to do so.

I'm simply trying my luck and see whether I need to build up my profile even more (including a GMAT retake).

Would a 1 year postpone be acceptable? Or would you advise against that?

Thanks a lot :)

Dear Arsene,

I don't think this is a good idea. Schools do not grant deferrals just because you ask. You really should not apply until you are ready to go. What you can do between now and fall 2010 when you apply is take your GMAT, visit potential schools, and do some research on post-MBA careers. All of these things will help you submit a stronger application when you are ready to go.

Good luck,
Lisa
