For the first one I would choose A

A- Correct

B- the problem with this one is that you can't use "that of" to refer to two seperate things. "that of" would have to reference the same thing each time it is used

C- Inproper comparison, you can't compare fact to mother

D- same as C

E- same as C

For #2 I would choose C

A- "they" is the wrong pronoun

B- "being profitable" is wrong

C- Correct

D- "last year that was only" is ambigious and awkward

E- "whereas they estimate it" is wrong. "they" can't refer to the non profit group.

(A) modeled the face of the statue like his mother's and the body like his wife's
correct : correctly compares the face of his mother to face of his statue and body of his wife to body of his statue.

(B) modeled the face of the statue after that of his mother and the body after that of his wife
Incorrect : we cannot compare two things using "after that"

(C) modeled the face of the statue like his mother and the body like his wife
Incorrect : incorrectly compares face of the statue to mother(instead of face of his mother) and body of statue to wife(instead of body of his wife)

(D) made the face of the statue after his mother and the body after his wife
Incorrect : same reason as B

(E) made the face of the statue look like his mother and the body look like his wife
Incorrect : same reason as C

I'm not too sure about #4 but I would choose E

A- I think the modifier is misplaced. "with double-digit unemployement" is a preopostional phrase acting as a modifier, and should be placed next to depression

B- same problem as in A

C- "it" is ambigious

D- "could be a severe strain" is awkward

E- Correct

Yes, A should be correct.

Here, we should remember that, the sentence is in the subjunctive form

so though "proposal' is singular, it should be followed by plural "would have"

According to me C should be correct ----" it " correctly refers to the noun closest to it "depression"

A - "that, with double-digit unemployment, could" --- becomes meaningless. Who can severely strain? ambiguous.

B - same reason as A

C - correct -- "it" refers to "depression"

D - same reason as A(pronoun error)

E- same as A(pronoun error.)

Just found out the OA's for these questions

1) - A

2) - C

3) - A

4) - A

I can see the explanation given for A for 4th question

<subject: Japan> is in danger of plunging into a depression that, <modfier: with double-digit unemployment>, <object of depression: could severly strain a society .... >

I think now A is superior to all options --beause "that" above restricts "depression" to modify "double-digit unemployment"

so "double-digit unemployment" correctly modifies "Japan"

I take my words back --- I forgot its a complex sentence, "it" can refer to Japan or depression or unemployment(ambiguous)

# 2 .) Hey why is the pronoun they wrong in option A ??

Why cant u use they for non profit group ???

IMO D is wrong because there is a semi colon - the two parts of a sentence are not independent - which should be when semi-colons are used .

E is wrong for the reason cited by osirus!

I find A wordier - correct me if i am wrong.

How is C the correct option ??? it estimates this year 73 % will be ?? isnt it not structured correctly ??

this sentence is too confusing..

(C) only 36 percent of the nation's 607 HMO's were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be

(D) it estimates 73 percent of the nation's 607 HMO's would be profitable this year; last year that was only 36 percent

(E) only 36 percent of the nation's 607 HMO's last year were profitable, whereas they estimate it this year to be 73 percent
