In a group of 1000 people, each person is either left-handed or right-handed but not both. 80% of the females are left-handed, and 84% of the right-handed people are male. How many people are right-handed?

1) There are 600 males in the group

2) There are 180 left-handed males in the group

Hi,
I believe this a DS problem
------Female--Male--Total
Left 80x ------y ------80x+y
Right 20x ----105x----125x
-------------------------
Total 100x --105x+y---1000

From(1):
Males= 600. So, females = 400
100x = 400 =>x = 4.
Right handed = 125x = 500
Sufficient
From(2):
y=180
But, 205x+y = 1000
So, 205x + 180 = 1000 => x=4
Right handed = 125x = 500
Sufficient

Hence, D

Hey Frank you are faster than me! :))

I totally agree that the answer is D

1) There are 600 males in the group

2) There are 180 left-handed males in the group
Use a group grid to organize the data:

Image

The grid shows that .16R = .2F, implying that R = (5/4)F.

Statement 1: M=600.
Thus, F = 400 and R = (5/4)*400 = 500.
Sufficient.

Statement 2: Left males = 180.
If the correct answer is D, then statement 2 must confirm the information given in statement 1: M=600, F=400, and R=500.
Along with Left Males = 180, plug into the grid M=600, F=400, and R=500 and fill in the missing values:

Image

The grid above reflects the only combination of values that will satisfy all the conditions given.
If M≠600, F≠400, and R≠500, then the values in the grid will change, and the conditions given in the problem won't be satisfied.
Thus, like statement 1, statement 2 indicates that R=500.
Sufficient.

The correct answer is D.

Thanks for your explanation Mitch!
Just a small doubt:
If in a DS question, I find that statement 1 is sufficient and statement 2 provides an information I found through statement 1 then do I consider statement 2 to be sufficient too?

Ditto as in this problem?

Be careful.
If a DS question asks for the value of x, and statement 1 gives sufficient information to determine that x=5, then x=5 must also satisfy statement 2.
This does not mean that x=5 is the only value that satisfies statement 2.
To deem statement 2 sufficient, we must be sure that no other value satisfies statement 2.

In the DS question above, the value of R determines all the other values in the grid.
Follow the pathways:
Image

Since R=500 implies that Left Male = 180, and the value of Left Male depends on the value of R, we know that no other value but R=500 will satisfy statement 2.

Hi,
84% of the right-handed people are male.
So, 16% of the right-handed are female
So, 20x is 16% of right handed
So, right-handed is (20x)(100/16) = 125x
right handed male = 125x - 20x = 105x
Cheers!

using the matrix method --

------ L-------R
M-------------0.84r----1000-f

F-----0.8f----0.2f------f

-----1000-r----r-------1000

thus 0.2f=0.16r
f/r=4/5. f=females r= right handed people.

a provides f=400 thus r=500.

b provides 1000-r = 0.8f + 180
thus r = 500.

hence D it is.

Hi,

This is a question based on Mitch's reply.

Considering we solved statement 2 with all of the information we got from working on statement 1, why is the correct answer option not C?

Unless there's a way to solve this problem with the information provided in Statement 2 alone. If yes, can you elaborate in that process?

Please let me know if I'm missing something.

Thanks!

IMO:D

Given,

% of female left and % of male left
Inferred: % of female right and % of make right

1) Total no of male. From this we can calculate one by one in the order as follows,

Male left, Male right, Total Male, Total Female, Female left, female right.
Sufficient!!!
2) No. of male left in the group. From this we can calculate one by one in the order as follows,

Male Right, total male , total female, female right, female left.
Sufficient!!!
Thanks for the explanation Mitch.
Usually, the approach for DS is that we evaluate each statement independently.

Please can you explain solving this question just by evaluating the q stem with statement 2?

Thanks a lot!

In a group of 1000 people, each person is either left-handed or right-handed but not both. 80% of the females are left-handed, and 84% of the right-handed people are male. How many people are right-handed?

1) There are 600 males in the group

2) There are 180 left-handed males in the group

This is an EITHER/OR group question.
Every person is EITHER male OR female.
Every person is either LEFT-HANDED or RIGHT-HANDED.
For an EITHER/OR group problem, use a GROUP GRID to organize the data.
Put all of the information in terms of ONE VARIABLE.

From the question stem:
Total people = 1000.
Let total females = 100f.
Since 80% of the females are left-handed, left-handed females = 80f and right-handed females = 20f.
Here's the grid so far:
_______________M________F_______Total

L:______________________80f

R:______________________20f________

total:__________________100f______1000

Since 84% of the right-handed people are male, right-handed females -- 20f in the grid above -- account for 16% of the total number of right-handed people:
20f = .16(total right-handed)
Total right-handed = 20f/.16 = 2000f/16 = 125f.
Completing the middle row of the grid, we get:
_______________M________F_______Total

L:______________________80f

R:____________105f______20f_______125f

total:__________________100f______1000

Statement 2: There are 180 left-handed males in the group.
Inserting this information into the grid, we get:
_______________M________F_______Total

L:____________ 180______80f_____180+80f

R:____________105f______20f_______125f

total:__________________100f______1000
The rightmost column implies the following:
(180+80f) + 125f = 1000.
205f = 820
f=4.
Thus, total right-handed = 125f = 125*4 = 500.
SUFFICIENT.
