Ok, so Im preparing for my exam and I hope somebody here can help critique my essay.
Its the first practice essay and I took it as if I was at the testing center.
Although I'd like to say it deserves a 6.0, I know it may be as bad as a 1 or 2, so critique me.
Imagination is more important than knowledge in most professions
Do you agree or disagree and make sure to address issues that challenge my position.
"Imagination versus knowledge, which is more important in a profession? Some people may claim that imagination is more important since it forms the basis for new inventions. However, how much can Imagination actually accomplish without certain levels of knowledge? For example, how can we build a light bulb when we do not know how the electricity needs to be conducted within the bulb? Although imagination is a fabulous skill to have under one's belt, knowledge is more important in professions.
First of all, let's explore the natural sciences. Mathematicians need certain levels of imagination; however, knowledge is the name of the game for mathematicians. Let's assume that the mathematician needs to figure out how much land is needed to build a new supermarket so that the cost of building is minimized. The mathematician would first need to understand what exactly is needed to solve the problem. He will then have to analyze possible solutions, and then try to solve the problem. Without the algebraic and analytical knowledge required to solve this kind of problem, his imagination would be hindered. Hence, as an example, a mathematician will definitely need higher levels of knowledge than imagination.
Another profession which requires more knowledge than imagination is that of teaching. Teachers need high levels of knowledge in order to be able to teach certain topics. For example, an English teacher may try to teach its students how to avoid type I errors. How would the teacher be able to teach its students about type I errors if the teacher was not highly skilled in grammar? It could be possible that without high levels of knowledge, the teacher may not even catch the error and hence, he or she would not be able to teach. Therefore, teaching is another profession which requires higher levels of knowledge than imagination.
Although the two professions discussed above require high levels of knowledge, descent imaginative skills will certainly help professionals in these areas. With the use of keen imagination, mathematicians could be able to find solutions to problems which currently have not been solved, or they could improve the efficiency of current solutions. On the other hand, teachers may find that with good imagination, they could find different techniques to teach topics. They may decide that traditional lecture methods are not as efficient as possible and thus, they may start to think of different ways to teach their subjects. Hence, although imagination is not necessarily more important than knowledge for some professions, it is definitely important to possess high levels of imagination in addition to high levels of knowledge.
Some professions may certainly require more imagination than knowledge; however, as they say, knowledge is power. High levels of knowledge are very important in many professions. Without knowledge, imagination would be almost useless."
