Please explain Setup (GMATPrep)

by gmat8000 » Sun Oct 21, 2007 5:33 pm
Pat bought 5 pounds of apples. How many pounds of pears could Pat have bought for the same amount of money?

1) One pound of pears costs $.50 more than one pound of apples.
2) One pound of pears costs 3/2 times as much as one pound of apples.

The answer is b and I intuitively understand why. But could somebody please explain how to set up using algebra?

Apple cost for 1 pounds = x..So total cost = 5x

stmt 1 - pear cost = x+0.5...so pears that one can buy for 5x = 5x/(x+0.5)...here u need to know x to solve this equa...So insuff

stmt 2 - pear cost = 1.5x...so pears that one can buy for 5x = 5x/1.5x = 10/3...Suff....Hence ans is B
