I don't think I fit the traditional MBA applicant mold so I'm wondering if you can help me get an idea of possible schools.
3.1 GPA from Western Michigan University, English - Creative Writing, minor in business.
Taking GMAT in 3 weeks, MGMAT and PR scores have been between 620-650, averaging 41-44 on Quant, 34-40 on Verbal. Will be hard at work over next few weeks to get that closer to 700.
Lots of EC in college and after, been active in community, leadership positions held, etc.
26, caucasian male, born in US.
I've been studying for the GMAT for a year, intensely for the last 6 months, and I'm starting to realize (very sadly) that 650 may be my highest potential. While, I'm not giving up on my efforts to reach 700, I am however bracing for the fact that 620-650 may be as good as it gets.
I work in financial operations for a large institutional bank, have strong recs from upper management, lots of team involvement.
I started at this company about a year ago and would like to stay for another 1-3 years (depending on my options for school).
To boost my lackluster GPA and GMAT I plan on taking 1-2 classes per semester at UC Irvine in quant, computer science, and econ. Basically, any high level class that would show that I'm capable of success in MBA classes. Also plan on increasing my efforts to get some articles published in local papers, etc, after GMAT to show that my skills as a writer/communicator.
In general, I'm not in a rush to get into an MBA program. I'd rather take the next 1-3 years rounding out my application to get into the best school possible. That will give me about 6 years professional work, a stronger academic record, and extended involvement in EC, community, leadership, etc.
I'm still narrowing down schools but want to get into a program/area that will move my career towards the creative side of business, I'm thinking something along the lines of product management/innovation, e-business, marketing, or corporate strategy. I know I still have a lot of work ahead in terms of narrowing down career goals and direction - but hopefully you get my general idea. I'm a very creative person and I want to bring that to table.
Considering the above, do you think I would have a shot at UCLA or comparable schools? I'd love to hear any schools that come to mind. I'm open to all areas, US and abroad. Again, my primary goal is to secure the a spot in the best school possible and increase my career options, even if it takes another few years. I know I can present a strong package when it comes to all aspects of the application but this damn GMAT has been over my head for so long, I'm trying to come to realistic terms of what a 650 may grant.
