Hi,

I took GMAT yesterday and scored 710(Should I retake?). This was my second attempt. In the first attempt I had scored 690(I was working late in office and hence was not able to sleep for 48 hours before giving the tests).

A look at my profile :

I am an Indian IT female. I have completed my Bachelors in Technology from a reputed institute in India with an average GPA of 4.3/5 ( 86 percent in terms of total marks).
I have 3+ years of work experience in the best (US) Products Developing company(if not the best then one of the best). I have cleared french DELF examinations and couple of stock markets examinations. I am actively involved in social work and work regularly for an NGO for Teaching in India. Also I work part time for AIDS and Leprosy awareness campaigns. I am the member of the creative community from our office and part of the core team for many organizational events. I am a free lancer writer and have my personal blog(which I am maintaining from past 4 years). I have won writing contests and I also write for social causes.

Apart from this I am a fitness and Yoga fanatic and deeply involved in Art of living work across India.
Professionally I have received 5-6 awards during my tenure at the company and currently lead a vendor team of 3 people.

Please evaluate my profile.

Hi Stacy,

I am targeting below universities

1. Tuck
2. ROSS
3. INSEAD France (my dream shot)
4. Chicago Booth
5. ISB

Please suggest some improvements and will a retake make a difference as such .

The reason I want to go to a B school is because I think this will help me leverage my potential across right channels professionally. I want to pursue my career in marketing and hence learning through people from different backgrounds, knowledge areas and culture is the best possible option for me. At this point in my career wherein I think I have done and achieved fairly for myself and the organization I work for, attending a B school and gaining experience from its curricula is the next logical step.

Hi Poorvi,

Thanks for the additional information. I think you can be competitive at the schools on your list. Your reason for seeking an MBA is valid, however, you might want to delve a little deeper into the reasons an MBA is necessary for you to achieve your goals. Simply stating that you want to meet people from other backgrounds and cultures frankly isn't enough. What skills do you need to learn to achieve your goals? How can the work you've done up until this point in your career combined with an MBA help you to achieve your goals? I encourage you to think about these things as you work on your applications. Essentially you need to convince the adcom(s) that an MBA is essential to your success.

In regard to retaking your GMAT. I think you should consider retaking it, but only if you truly feel you can improve your score. If you don't think you can improve your score then your time and energy would be best spent on your applications.

Hi Stacey,

Apologies for the delay in my response. I was onsite and hence I could not reply. I have decided not to take the GMAT again Smile and continue with my application process. I have one question that I wanted to discuss: As of now my profile is very IT oriented but post MBA I want to pursue a career in marketing. Can you suggest which short term courses I can take and some books on the subject to gain a knowledge on marketing since I am a novice to the actual work in the field.

Hi,

Nice to hear from you. Right now it's probably best for you to focus your time and energy on developing your post MBA goals. Rather than attempting to learn more about marketing, try to figure out exactly what role/job interests you. Is it brand management? PR? Figure out the role and then figure out the industry - high tech, CPG, etc. Once you identify these elements it will become much easier for you to articulate your goals and interest in marketing. However, spending time now learning about marketing basics and principles won't really benefit you - that is what an MBA is for!
